the first ultrasound

Saturday, September 9, 2006

Dear Baby,
Yesterday your Daddy and I went to our very first ultrasound appointment. It was one of the most amazing things we've ever seen. The sonographer put the warm (thankfully) jelly on my belly and all of a sudden there you were. It made the pregnancy that much more real.

I was happy to see that there was only one of you in there and you really seemed to be enjoying the buoyancy of the amniotic fluid. You were bouncing all over the place and were really active. The technician (Jillian) took lots of pictures and measurements of you while we were there. She pointed out your various parts—which were so obvious, as you look completely like a human already at just 12 weeks.

After about ten minutes or so you settled down and Jillian wanted you to move a bit more so she had me cough a couple of times to get you going. When I did you put your arm up to your head as if I was putting you out. That made all three of us laugh. It was so cute and one of the main things your Dad would tell people about after the appointment. Then you got the hiccups. Amazing that you could get the hiccups like that in-utero. The sonographer surprised us by bringing up your heartbeat for a listen. It was like a quick whosh, whosh, whosh and she said that it was a good heartbeat at 158 beats per minute. We could see your little heart beating right through your chest on the monitor.

All in all we spent about a half in hour in there ohhing and ahhing over our little baby. Jillian took a whopping 25 pictures of you and gave us a whole two. But that's okay, I've looked at those two very real pictures of you at least a dozen times since that moment. Probably many more than that.

Can't wait to see you again at around 20 weeks—to find out your gender. Just another six months and we'll be holding you in our arms instead of a picture.

Love,
Mommy

Hi, little baby!

Auntie Jenius can see you quite well, unlike the picture of her own niece, which we were all holding sideways (ooh-ing and aahh-ing over it, anyway, so as not to offend the parents) until it's other auntie cocked her head to one side and said "turn it around".

158. Sounds like a girl. Or is 158 a boy? I can't remember.

Before long you'll be feeling those hiccups. And before long Josh will be able to feel those hiccups too. And before long you'll be hearing those hiccups.

No offense to you or my future niece/nephew, but somehow this picture has made it's way onto my refridgerator, and I find it hard to eat anything after thinking about what it really looks like right now.

I've only just started to be able to work these pictures out. Are you going to get those 3D ones done? Theyre amazing, only I think they're done later on 'cause, like Alex said, it'll look pretty minging at the moment. But beautiful as well!!!

Blogarita—What, my round belly?

MD—Amazing indeed.

Jen—"Auntie Jen", so cute. My Mom is gonna want to know who you are now. (Mom—Jen is one of my first blog buddies. I've "known" her for over a year now.)

Violet—Thanks. The technology is so fabulous, it was almost like being in the womb with the baby.

Amy—Thanks. I may have wept a bit when I read the letter to my husband. Maybe...just a little...it's the hormones.

Tim—I hadn't heard that about the heartbeat, but of course totally had to look it up. The theory is anything over 145 (or was it 140?) is a girl.

Alex—Talk to Mom, I didn't put it up there. And, come on, I know you have a stronger stomach than that!

Fuzzy—You can see the head and all of it right? And, "minging" is that some sort of insult?

"you really seemed to be enjoying the buoyancy of the amniotic fluid" has to be the best line I have ever read in a blog. EVER!! :)

Wow, your experience almost makes me want to go out and get pregnant...just don't tell my husband! Are you going to find out the sex or keep it a surprise?

fantastagirl—That's one of the things that was so cool for us, you could really see all the parts. It actually looked human!

VP—Yeah, we want to find out the sex, but it's too soon for that. Another 8 weeks or so.

Dutchy—Thanks!

LOL! My sister started that when she was in college and got a pet fish. The other two of us siblings were called "Auntie" and it sort of stuck, through cats, dogs and now my niece. I dubbed myself Auntie to all of my friends pets and kids, too, so...it carries over well...

Awesome. Baby looks comfortable all laid back. I couldn't imagine being preggers with twins or triplets even. Wow. And I didn't know that babies were this fully developed at three months.

Pixie:
My baby had hiccups every night at 9:00 p.m. sharp. When I was really huge everyone could feel them. Then Georgia was born and she had hiccups every night at 9:00 p.m. sharp.

My wish for you is that you get to experience - first nine months - then a lifetime of these beautiful hiccups.
